October 14, 2022- This Is the Last One!!

Hello All, Happy Fall, The time since our last update has sped by and now this is our LAST update.   Our last transfer in New Hampshire has been busy with mission tour, training replacements, going to favorite places one more time and saying goodbyes.  I think Dad has given great detail about most of those things in his segment below, so no need to write it twice. The mission tour was mid-September and that was when we said our goodbyes to most of the missionaries and then we stuck around for another 3 weeks!  That was not my favorite.  I like to say goodbye and go. However the extra time did allow for a few lunch dates and special goodbyes.  Some of them are like family.  My phone is full of pictures with missionaries that will need to be labeled and put in a book. Lots of promises made to keep in touch and see each other again - we shall see... These last 18 months have been filled with experiences both challenging and rewarding.  Ti...

August 29, 2022- Time is Short

Hi to All, We have recently been together so I think the need for an update has been done in person - but for the journaling aspect, I guess it's time.... It was great to be able to be there for Ethan and Maddy's sealing and the great dance party afterwards! We are looking forward to the opportunity to spend some more get to know you time with them once we get home.   Thanks to each of you for making the effort to spend the day at grandma's 90th birthday celebration.  It meant a lot to her to have the chance to visit with each of you, if only for a few minutes.   The end of July, we had the opportunity to go to Burlington VT and have lunch with our good friends, Ben and Chantale Hagar.  They were in Plattsburgh NY for their annual summer visit and rode the ferry over for lunch and a short, nice, much needed visit.  They live in Florida now and so our opportunities for in person visits are few and far between.   We also thoroughly enjoyed...

July 10, 2022- Update of the happenings in New Hampshire

June Was Bustin’ Out All Over! We wanted to include an update on the changeover from our outgoing Mission President and Companion, the Becks, to the new—President and Sister Hayden. The “change of command” officially occurred on Wednesday the 29 after a very short transition. The Hayden’s flew in late Tuesday, spent their first night in the Mission Home, and we met them at the Mission Office the next morning for quick introductions.  They then spent two final hours with the Becks, Mom took pictures of both couples, and we headed to Boston with the Becks.  Our task was to shuttle them to the downtown Marriott, where they were planning to “take off their name tags, jump into jeans, and walk the Freedom Trail”.  There were tears and hugs all around—both Mom and I had developed a special relationship with our first ever Mission President and Companion, and they will remain special forever.  (It was kinda funny--before we left Manchester, they w...

June 12, 2022- Time to Catch Up

May was a long month! It seemed to stretch on and on. But there were some wonderful, memorable  events that will be among the highlights of our service here in New England. Those begin with the visit of President Russell M. Ballard, Acting President of the  Quorum of the Twelve. He fulfilled a commitment to come to Topsfield, Mass to  dedicate a memorial to five generations of Smiths that settled and lived in the area, the fifth being Joseph Smith, Sr., the father of Joseph Smith, Jr. He (Pres Ballard) is descended from Hyrum Smith, which by my count makes five generations before Joseph, and five generations after. We began the weekend Friday with a session with missionaries from the NH Manchester and Massachusetts Boston Missions—we watched on Zoom.  So many points that he and his companions, Elder LeGrand Curtis and his son Craig made:  Squeeze every drop out of your experience—be thankful every day  Push past weariness, fatigue and discouragement  Your s...

May 12, 2022- Guess It's Time

A little late getting this out this month—Happy Mother’s Day! We’ve had a great month of April—not because of all the fun notes, calls, texts, and such for my birthday, but because we know you are praying for us and all the missionaries that are serving across the world.  This is a great effort, and we consider ourselves blessed and lucky that we can be a part of it.   I’ve been contemplating the difference between the faith of my youth, and what I have come to know now.  It was as if I was in a great and spacious art museum, with many galleries and styles and periods of art.  As I began my tour, there were beautiful, satisfying, and inspiring pieces of art that captured my attention, were amazing in their intricacies and detail, and were lovely to behold.  Then I walked into a different gallery, and what I beheld there was so much more wonderful.  The artists had learned from those that had come before them, had implemented amazing techniques a...
